Common questions
How much money could I save?
A typical household with a 4.2 kilowatt-peak solar energy system could knock between £160 and £400 a year off their energy bills. Not to mention the potential to sell energy back to the National Grid, generating £80 to £110 per year.
How much does it cost to install?
We’d love to give you a definitive answer but it really does depend entirely on your energy choice, the size of your home and your power demands. As a rough guide, a typical 3 bedroom house would need a 4kW system comprising around 8 to 10 solar panels at a cost of £9,000 to £10,000. However, we’ll work with you and the budget you have available to create a solution that works.
Are there grants avaiable?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a UK government energy-efficiency scheme designed to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions. The scheme is focussed on helping improve the most energy inefficient homes and support those in fuel poverty. So depending on your circumstances, there could be support available to install a renewable energy system in your home, get in touch to discuss your circumstances.
Do I need planning permission?
A single domestic wind turbine or roof mounted solar panels are normally covered under ‘permitted development’ regulations and therefore do not need planning permission before installation. There are of course exceptions to every rule and if you’re unsure please do contact us to discuss your individual circumstances.
Do I have enough space?
There are minimum space requirements for a domestic wind turbine – including the need for 5m of space between the turbine and your boundary – which could impact their suitability. However most UK house roofs are suitable for solar panel installation. To generate 4kW of energy (enough to power a typical 3 bedroom house) you would need around 28 square meters of roof space.
What if my house is in the shade?
Don’t panic! Of course a south facing, unshaded roof would generate the most power but that’s not to say it’s the only option. If your house is in the shade, there are other options, including ground panels where you can control the direction and angle of your installation to capture as much Devon sunshine as you can. Whatever your set up, we can help suggest a solution that works with your home. Please do get in touch to discuss.
